Roulette has a very long history and has appeared in many forms. The European form first appeared in the mid 19th century and was invented in France. The object of European Roulette is to try to pick the number that the Roulette Wheel will land on. In Roulette, the Roulette Wheel is spun and a small ball is set into action in the opposite direction. Once the wheel has stopped the ball will come to rest on a number. There are 37 numbered slots on the wheel with red and black alternating slots. These are marked with the numbers 1 through 36. There is one green slot that has the number 0 on it. A player makes his bet on the number, color or group of numbers that he thinks the ball will land on. In European Roulette, the single zero gives a slightly better odds as compared to American Roulette. The bets in European Roulette are the same as in any other Roulette game with the exception of there being only a single zero as opposed to the additional double zero in American Roulette. Bets are placed at the beginning of the game before the wheel is spun. A player can choose to make "Outside Bets" which are bets placed on the "Columns", "1st 12", "2nd 12", "3rd 12", "High", "Low", "Even" or "Odd". Inside bets are placed within the numbered grid on the numbers 1 through 36. The bets have different payouts as described below.
Most European Roulette games offer the "En Prison" rule. This rule involves the "Outside Bets"; when the ball lands on the zero, you can leave your bet for another spin. You bet is said to stay "En Prison" and if the ball lands on the zero again, the bet is lost, if it's a hit then the bet is released from "Prison". |
